Tracking without picking a carrier first

Most people arrive holding a number and nothing else. The confirmation email named a shop rather than a carrier, or it named a service that handed the parcel to someone else halfway. This page is built for that situation: leave the selector on Auto detect couriers, paste the number, and let the lookup work out which network the shipment belongs to.

Detection reads the shape of the number — its length, its prefix, and in some formats a check digit that only resolves for one carrier. That is why a number pasted with its original spacing usually works, while a number retyped from a photo often does not. It recognises the major express networks and, through the international postal standard described below, items posted by any national post. Numbers that fall outside those patterns still track normally; the carrier just has to be picked from the list first.

What the number itself tells you

Tracking numbers are not arbitrary. Each carrier issues them to a fixed pattern, so the number often identifies its own network before any lookup happens. A few of the widely used shapes:

The S10 row is worth knowing on its own. It is the international postal standard, so a number in that shape belongs to a national post rather than a courier, and the final two letters name the country the item was posted from — not where it is going.

When a number returns nothing

A blank result is usually timing rather than a lost parcel. A label is created when the sender prints it, which can be a day or more before anyone physically collects the item, and nothing appears until the first scan. Check the number against the confirmation message before assuming the shipment is missing: an order reference, an invoice number, and a tracking number often sit next to each other and look alike.

Cross-border shipments have a second gap. A parcel handed from an export carrier to the destination country's postal service may go quiet for several days between the last outbound scan and the first inbound one, and the destination network sometimes issues its own number for the final leg. Both records describe the same parcel at different stages, not two competing shipments.

Reading the result

Status wording is not standardised across carriers, so read the event text and its timestamp rather than the label alone. In transit covers everything between collection and the delivery round. Out for delivery means a driver is carrying it today. An exception is a delay, an address problem, or a failed attempt — it is a note about the route, not a verdict on the parcel.

When something needs chasing, the sender is almost always the faster route. The shipping account belongs to them, carriers open investigations with the account holder rather than the recipient, and for a marketplace order the seller's message thread reaches the carrier more quickly than a general support line would.
